Catalytic Converters Explained: How They Work and Why They Are Important

posted on
There are billions of cars on the road, and each one is a source of air pollution. The large amount of pollution that vehicles produce can create big problems. Most states have put vehicle emission requirements into law to help improve air quality and restrict the amount of pollution that cars can produce. The auto industry has also made many refinements to car engines and fuel systems to keep up with these laws. Our vehicle's exhaust system produces harmful emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides that are damaging to the atmosphere if released into the air. The catalytic converter came about in 1975 to convert these harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they ever leave the car's exhaust system.Catalytic Converters in Woodbridge, VA

What is a Catalytic Converter?

Catalytic converters are a vital component of a car's emissions system. This component helps to reduce the amount of harmful pollution going out of the tailpipe. The amount of toxic pollutants is substantially reduced because the catalytic converter takes these gases and converts them into water vapor.

How Do Catalytic Converters Work?

A catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system and is located between the engine and the muffler. The catalytic converter transforms hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides into water vapor and carbon monoxide so that our vehicles can cause less harm to the environment. Within a catalytic converter, engine gases pass through a ceramic honeycomb structure covered with catalysts. The catalyst creates a reaction with the exhaust gasses, changing their chemical structure. After the catalyst has done its job, what emerges from the exhaust is mostly nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water in the form of steam.

Why is the Catalytic Converter Important?

The main function of a catalytic converter is to reduce harmful emissions, but it also improves your car's efficiency. A well-maintained vehicle will extend the life of your catalytic converter, minimizing the possibility of a costly catalytic converter repair or replacement. If you have a failing catalytic converter or any other exhaust system issues, the car won't perform as well, and you can even risk deadly carbon monoxide gasses getting into the passenger cabin.
